VENISON!

My dad got a deer the other day. That was pretty cool, but even better was when he quartered it up, I got to eat the scraps. And I even got to worry a piece of hide! That was great fun. Mom put the quarters in the cooler to finish hanging since it was too warm to let it hang from the barn rafters.

For the last couple days, she has been processing it. That means she is cutting all the meat up for roasts, steaks and sausages. I guess you know I sit right there at the kitchen counter waiting for her to drop something. The rule is if it lands on the floor, it's mine. Unless of course it's something that I'm not supposed to have -- like chocolate. Too bad I can't have chocolate. That is the ultimate. Yep, I got into some a few years ago. It was dark chocolate and nothing bad happened, so I don't know why I can't have it. Oh well.
Venison Tripe - getting ready to finish washing and grinding

Back to the venison - mom has a huge bucket of fat and scraps she said she is going to grind into dog food for me. She said she is going to mix some eggs in with it, some fish oil and other stuff that's supposed to be good for me.

She already made the tripe. I have to remind her to take a bucket of that out of the fridge. Dad really grossed out when he saw that. She took the deer stomach and washed all the grass out of it - ZOMG, those deer eat a whole lot of grass! Then she cut it up in small pieces and put it in the food processor to grind it up. I won't eat it whole. It's like eating rubber or something, and that is just nasty. But when it's all ground up, it's the bomb! I don't get nearly enough tripe.

Oh, and she save the liver and heart for me, too. Then she cut up the lungs and dried them up in the dehydrator. Those are the Best. Treats. Ever.

ATVs and Off Leash in the Woods

Wow - it's been a while since mom let me on the computer. Well, not really let me... but you know I have to sneak on when she's not around. Anyway, she let me do this really cool thing. Dad takes me for runs on the ATV. He rides and I get to go OFF LEASH!! As long as I stay with him, he lets me do it again and again. It is so much fun.
This is me watching what is going on. Actually, looking for those little rat dogs. There is one -- a chihuahua -- he thinks he is the baddest thing out there. Well, I showed him. He thought he was going to growl at me. I got a bigger growl than he does. He took off with his tail between his legs. Mom and the little rat dog's mom were laughing at him.

We don't even stay on the property. We go up the long driveway, then onto the gravel road. There is another driveway-like trail down the road, but there are no houses down there yet. I hope no one ever puts a house there. At the end of the driveway, there's a big circle -- I think mom called it a cul-de-sac. I smell all kinds of neat things there. Things like deer and coyote and fox. Mom and dad found footprints there.

Then, this one time, dad went down the side of the mountain at the end of the cul-de-sac. It was really steep, but I had fun running down the mountain. We took this other trail -- it's the same trail that mom walks me on when we go to the river. We went up another steep trail and came out behind our place. That was really neat, except instead of running next to dad, I was going up the hill in front of him, and kept stopping. It was pissing him off because he said something about not stopping on the hill or the ATV would not make it up there right since it was so steep.

Another time he took down the driveway, then we went to the right instead of to the left. At the end of the road, you can go up a big hill or go down into a field. We went in the field and I could run and run and run. It was so much fun.
This is the river that we go down to. The other day, dad's sister came up and we all walked down here. Everyone crossed the river to walk down to the waterfall and left me. I had not choice but to walk through the water. I hate walking in the water. I hate water. I had no choice. I wanted to be next to everyone.

The longest run I got to go on was on this place dad called Mangled Vine. It's another gravel road about a quarter mile from our driveway. That is really steep too, and when you are at the top, you can see forever. Hey, I wonder what's on that other mountain? At the bottom, there's a narrow trail into the woods. Dad said it goes to the same cow pasture that we see on the highway, and that there are a lot of cows there. I know there are cows there, because I bark at them every time we drive past them in the truck. But there is no way in hell I'm going into the woods on such a narrow path.

I didn't like the big paths that go to the river, but mom made me walk on them with her, so I got used to them, but there is no. way. in. hell. I. am. walking. down. there. Nope. Not where trees can smack me. I can't bite trees back -- well, I could, but that would be useless. That's all okay -- I get to see the stupid cows when we drive by that farm anyway.

My Thanksgiving Dinner - 2011

Wow. Just like every year, mom makes me a big plate. Stuffing, turkey, potatoes and gravy, succotash, and ham 'n mo'fo's. Dad really spoils me - he gave me a second plate!

Dad testing to make sure it's not too hot.

Yummy! Give it here!

Now that's what I'm talking about!

Hmmm... smells good... little hot for me...

Let me circle it a couple of times... it's still too hot.

Yah, here we go. Circling did the trick. Cooled off enough for me to wolf down!

My Review of Thyro-up for Dog Hypothyroidism

Originally submitted at Pet Wellbeing Inc.

What is dog hypothyroidism?

A dog's thyroid is a gland in the neck which controls metabolism and body growth. When this gland produces too much or too little thyroid hormones, health problems follow.

Thyroid conditions are very common in both cats and dogs. ...

Thyro-up for Dog Hypothyroidism

By Cheryl from Valrico, FL on 5/2/2011

5out of 5

Pros: Effective, No Side Effects, Good Value, Gentle

Cons: None

Best Uses: Daily Care, Treat Specific Illness

Describe Yourself: Long-Time Pet Owner

I give this to my 100-pound GSD twice a day as directed. It makes his coat shiny and helps stop the itching associated with hypothyroidism and his environmental allergies. I noticed a difference in his coat and behavior in three days.

Traveling

Well, a year later since I last posted - I should pay more attention to this blog. Rambo has traveled several times back and forth from FL to TN. He loves, loves, loves to ride. Even after the long rides, he wants back into the truck to go for more rides, so we take him everywhere we go up here. The neighbor has three little dogs - a Dachshund, and Maltese, and I think the other is a Maltese mix - he doesn't seem to bother with them too much - though he wants to try to hump one of them (the male) and he can't figure out how to do his domination thing because he's so tall and Dingus is so short! LOL

Long Ride

Rambo did better than I expected on the ride from Florida to Tn. I figured he wouldn't get back in the truck after the first stop... he is quite the stubborn pooch when he wants to be. But, he couldn't wait to get back in. I guess he figured we were on the way home. He rode well... he does love to ride. He wouldn't eat the sausage, egg and cheese biscuit we got him from mavdonalds, though. Guess he knows what is bad for him. Once we got up here, he did fine - even on the tie out. He's not used to being tied up, since we have a fenced yard at home. He gladly gets in the back of the truck at night, so we don't have to worry about him tussling with wild animals. We open the swcreens on the topper for him. He was ready to get out and get breakfast of sausage and eggs this morning. The one thing he is not used to is not being able to lay under the a/c vent.

Yeasty Ears

Well, mom had to take me to the vet a couple of weeks ago. Turns out I have an ear infection and a skin infection. She thinks it's because she fed me wheat. Dang - no more bread for me! I loved my bread and butter.

Well, I definitely don't like anything in my ear. I am a big handful when she has to put the nasty stuff in my ears. And there are three different drops, too! I try to back up, but then my butt gets stuck up against the wall. I forget that happens every time. Dang. Then she won't even quit it when I growl at her. Normally when I growl at people, they back off, but not her. She doesn't care. To hell with it, I'm gonna keep growling anyway even though I know she gets her way.

I went to the vet this past Tuesday for a check up and the vet said she can see half of my ear drum, so it must be getting better. I still have to have the stupid drops, though. Then she gave mom another bottle of stuff.

ZOMG I thought it was more stuff for my ears, but it was some special shampoo because my hair is all dry. I normally don't like baths, but since I am itchy I stood there and let her give me a bath. I even waited until she moved before I shook myself. What a good dog I am.

Well, I know I have to have more ear drops. Mom keeps saying that if I would let her get all the drops in my ears, this whole process would have been finished two weeks ago. I guess I just forget about that and give her grief anyway. Besides, it's kind of fun to give her grief.

Squeaky Ball!!

Well, it's been forever since I was able to sneak on the computer. Mom works from the house now--something about writing and editing. That means she's on the computer all the time She went outside to talk to the neighbor, so I got to sneak on here. She made a movie of me and my Auntie Kym's Secret Santa present--my all time favorite! Shhhh.... don't tell mom, but I like it cuz my cousin Athena stole it from Auntie Kym and was playing with it. Mom says it can't still smell like Athena, but I think it does! WoooooHOOOOO!

Mom likes to hide the squeaky ball in the soda boxes. The first time she did that, it took me a long time to get it out of there--that sucker just rolls around and every time I grab it with my big mouth, the stupid soda box gets stuck on my snot-locker, which causes mom to roll on the floor in fits.

I usually tear them up, but I managed to get it out of there this time without tearing the box up. AND I get get that squeaky ball out of there in less than five minutes now!

And while I'm at it, Athena, when are you gonna bring your sexy self over here so I can sniff your butt?? I'm getting tired of just sniffing the squeaky ball. I want the real thing!!

Stealing mom's computer again

Well, mom took me to the vet today - this is the place that mom rescued me from. They rescued me from somewhere else ... and I ain't tellin' where from. I have these danged ticks on me and I hate when mom pulls them off... I growl at her when she does it cuz she pulls my hair.

Well, I guess she didn't want to pull them anymore - and she hates them anyway, and won't touch them with bare hands - so she took me to Dr. Hughes. Dr. Huges gave me some stuff called Advantix and those things are just dropping off!

I got a whole lot of attention at the vets today - I got weighed. I weigh 93 pounds. I think I'm still growing - I'm not even two yet. Everyone remembered me and I remembered them. It was kinda neat seeing them again, but I really like my mom's house better. She doesn't keep me in a kennel like they did at the vet's.

After that, mom said since I was so good, she would get me a bone. Well, I got to get out and go in the pet store! Wow, that was kewl! They had tons of bones and all kinds of food - but no raw food, so mom didn't buy me food there. She got a present for her Secret Santa thing she is doing online and she let me pick out my bone!

Then, when we got home, she hung out and checked her email, then decided she was going to mow the yard. Well, she always locks me in the house when she does that. I think she must open the gate or something, cuz I never get to go out when she is messing with the yard. Well, my butt decided for some reason that it was going to explode.... boy was she mad when she came in and saw the dire rear on the carpet. She didn't yell at me though. But dad was mad. I can always tell, even if he doesn't yell. He tells me to get away from him. I heard mom tell him it wasn't my fault. But she did say, "Figures he can't go out before I open the fence, or wait - nooooo he has to decide to get dire rear during the half hour I have the gate open." Ooops.

At least I had a nice day today, though. Now I'm chilling, but those ticks are falling off me. I have to sniff them so mom can find them. Then she burns them up in the sink. They must be some nasty bugs if she burns them. She doesn't crush them with her shoe like she does spiders.

Well, tomorrow is football day, so I don't think I'll get to ride in the car tomorrow. Darn. I like to ride in the car.

Sunday, August 19, 2007

Oooooohhhhh Now I'm Mad.....

I snuck on here to write something and found this in Mom's email... Some people just don't have a clue out there. There are no mean dogs - only people who make mean dogs. I know... I'm a GSD and I'm not mean. Well, most of the time. I do mean things to Mom sometimes, just cuz I want her to stay home with me - I do stuff like take her stuff off the counter, pee on the carpet - you know, things like that! She get sooooo mad at me!! I just laugh at her. She kicks me outside for peeing on the carpet, but I don't care, cuz she lets me right back in about a half hour later. I just have fun chasing lizards out there...

First they came for the Pit Bulls and I did not speak out because I did not have a Pit Bull.

Then they came for the Pugs and I did not speak out because I did not have a Pug.

Then they came for the Golden Retriever and I did not speak out because I did not have a Golden Retriever.

Then they came for the Collie and there was no one left to speak out for my Collies.

Chicken Glop - Recipe

5 pounds leg quarters (plus or minus)
2 tsp garlic powder (NOT garlic salt)
5 eggs
1 can mackeral
1/2 c. uncooked rice

Boil the chicken and the rice together until the chicken falls off the bones.
Grind up chicken and bones.
Mix in big bowl (this makes about 9 cups) with about a cup of the broth, the rice, the canned mackeral, eggs and garlic powder.

You can add veggies if you want - either grind with the chicken, or fine chop, if your dog / cat will eat them in chunks.

Should stay in fridge for a couple days, but if you are using small portions, just freeze what you are not going to use up within 2 days.

Breed Specific Legislation

BSL is legislation that dictates what breeds are considered dangerous. It is designed to outlaw ownership of these breeds. Depending on the state or county you live in, BSL can apply to just about any breed of dog, though the most popular breeds that end up getting legislated (restricted or banned) are German Shepherd Dogs, Pit Bulls, Dobermans, Chow Chows, Rottweilers, and other large breed dogs. Dog attacks can be for a variety of reasons, including organized dog fighting, responses of dogs to mistreatment, dogs acting as attack or guard animals, or the unexpected, random neighborhood altercation.

Less for dog fighting, which is illegal, well-trained dogs will not randomly attack another person. If more people were to train their dogs or not mistreat them (for those abusers out there), we would not have a need for BSL. Mistreatment of dogs includes hitting, kicking, tying them out all day with no food, water or shade (or at the least, for those dogs who are fed once per day, no water and shade), and other practices that may not necessarily make a dog mean, such as overfeeding, not grooming, etc.

If your dog is properly socialized, there should not be a problem with the "random neighborhood altercation." If your dog accidentally gets loose (i.e. kid opens the door and dog takes off), and is properly socialized, the dog will have no reason to attack a random person.

How do you properly socialize your dog, you ask? It is easiest to socialize your dog as a puppy take him everywhere, let him meet strangers, other dogs, introduce him to different animals, like cats, rabbits, other dogs, etc.. It is most important that you introduce your dog to other dogs, so he is not dog aggressive.

It is more work to socialize an older dog, but the same principles apply. If you have a seriously aggressive dog you are working with, you may want to try a muzzle on him while out in public. Gradually phase out the muzzle. It can be done without a muzzle, but you must be attuned to your dog's signals, and constantly be on watch.

Legislation that generalizes, such as something along the lines of "'Dangerous dogs' are defined, in part, as those which have aggressively bitten, attacked, or endangered or has inflicted severe injury on a human being on public or private property,' as well as those which have when unprovoked, chased or approached a person upon the streets, sidewalks, or any public grounds in a menacing fashion or apparent attitude of attack'" would be proper legislation, and is not breed specific.

Legislation that specifically mentions one or more breeds should not be allowed. A person could have the friendliest pit bull or the meanest nastiest chihuahua. Just because a chihuahua is small, doe not mean it cannot bite and do some damage, but you will not see a chihuahua specifically mentioned in breed restrictions or bans.

BSL unfairly targets those who do have trained dogs that are labeled "dangerous" by either restricting or banning the breed, causing home owner's insurance rates to go up and not allowing the dog in a public place where dogs would otherwise be allowed. It also makes it difficult for people who show their dogs to go anywhere off the show-grounds with their dogs.

In conclusion, BSL is a way to phase out certain breeds of dogs, most of them the larger breeds. It does not keep abusers, dog-fighters, and puppy mills from doing their nasty deeds, but puts a strain on honest breeders and responsible pet owners.

New Food Again

Shhhhh! Don't tell mom - I'm on her computer, she will absolutely kill me! She started feeding me whole raw chicken and cans of jack mackeral and country style ribs and lots and lots of good stuff! I like it much better than the cooked stuff! She even makes breakfast for me on Sunday mornings for a treat! She gave me French Toast last Sunday - I hope she makes that again! That is some good stuff! I'm glad she doesn't cook my bacon, though - I like that raw, plus it's good for my fur and that stupid dandruff I get. I noticed a bit more, she's gonna have to up the amount of bacon on Sundays! Right now I only get one thick slice. I could eat the whole 3 pound package! ~~Rambo

BARF Revisited

I've been feeding Rambo a combination of cooked and raw for over three months now - his teeth, which used to have some yellow near the gums (he 15 months old) have turned completely white.

He had dandruff when we brought him home in December, and continued to have dandruff, no matter what I did. He does not have dandruff anymore, and his coat has gotten shiny and soft. Not only that, but he doesn't have that musky dog smell - and I haven't had to give him a bath since starting on raw.

I also waste less food, as he used to leave some kibble every day, no matter how little I gave him. Now he eats every bit and is looking for more! He's a much happier shepherd, and very active!

Some tips: give about 1/2 tsp garlic per day in your dog's food - the old wives' tail about repelling fleas is true.

I feed one strip of thick sliced bacon (raw) 1 to 3 times / week - most often once a week. The fat from the bacon has helped with softening his fur and making him look sleek and shiny.

For more info on feeding raw, please check out the Raw-lite list.

Dog Food - To Feed or Not to Feed?

I've been reading about this BARF diet. Ok, this sounds good - dogs are canines and are supposed to eat raw meat.

I joined a wonderful group and started reading the posts. The one thing I can't do is feed my dog chicken bones - he's like a vacuum and inhales everything that is big enough to fit in his mouth! He gets raw beef, beef heart, pork, whatever I can find on sale. I mix it with his kibble two to three, sometimes four times a week. The rest of the days he gets canned mixed with kibble.

In comes 50 million recalls - or so it seems. I'm not a patient person, so I don't have the patience to look in all the store to figure out which brand has been recalled - or worse - which brand is going to be recalled tomorrow!

I see chicken thighs on sale for $0.89 / pound. Hmmm... I get to thinking. I buy them and cook 5 pounds of them. I break out my grandmother's old fashioned meat grinder - you know - the one where your arm falls off by the time you're done grinding?

I grind up all the cooked chicken - bones and all. I add a can of jack mackeral, 5 raw eggs and about two tablespoons of garlic power - mix it all up. I feed this "glop" to Rambo (not all at once, this lasted me for a week). He LOVES it.

I have been feeding Rambo a combination of cooked dinners and raw for two weeks. His coat has never looked better. His teeth had been starting to get some yellow on them, even though I fed raw meat and bones a few times a week. His cooked and raw still gets mixed with some kibble - but his teeth are now white, his coat is soft. You wouldn't believe how soft.

He's a much happier dog - and I'm a much happier mom - a side effect that I was told about, but did not believe - he poops less! He poops less because his body uses more of the food I give him, since it's not all preservatives and fillers and other junk his gut just does not process.
